Dear Mama,
As much as the visual of your pregnant belly seeming bigger on your left or right side than the other can freak you out, it’s actually quite common. Your pregnant belly looking lopsided generally means that your uterus has either shifted to your left or right side. But don’t worry, over the duration of your pregnancy, the internal positioning of your womb straightens out by itself.
Pregnancy is amazing, fascinating, and an incredible period. Sure, it comes with its own aches and pain, morning sickness, mood swings, but if you look at your pregnancy carefully, you’ll realize you’re no less than a superwoman for doing so much without you even knowing for your baby.
For those nine months, you would’ve experienced a whole lot of feelings and mood swings to last you a lifetime, and if you’re experiencing pregnancy for the very first time, then you’re in for some surprises that can even freak you out.
How is your pregnant belly bigger on one side?
In my third trimester (a trimester that brought so much discomfort for me because of my huge belly), after getting up from my afternoon nap, I was shocked and freaked out to see the right side of my belly being a whole lot bigger than the left side, and it felt quite tight too.
It literally seemed like every internal organ in my belly had shifted to the right side. I was even scared to touch because it was very tight, and I was afraid to unintentionally hurt my unborn (tales of a first-time mum). Well, in my case, it only lasted for a few minutes, and the moment I’m on and about with my day, the belly came back to its normal shape.
So, is this common for a pregnant belly to seem bigger on one side? Absolutely yes! You can experience this at any point in your pregnancy. Even women in their first trimester or the time when they start showing can experience this lopsidedness of their pregnant belly.
While the visual of a pregnant belly being bigger on one side can seem very unusual compared to the perfect belly shape that we see on the TV, a baby bump leaning towards more on one side is quite common than you might think.
This lopsidedness usually only means that your uterus sits more to your left or right side, and it will resolve on its own.
Another reason why this can happen is that little bundle of joy of yours has already started preferring one side over the other and keeps putting more pressure on that side.
Women can actually sometimes freak out by looking at this odd shape belly (like me), but it’s actually nothing to be worried about.
The internal positions of your uterus generally straighten out by themselves without any interference in the duration of your pregnancy.
You might also sometimes notice this odd-shaped belly, leaning more towards one side, when you’re lying flat on your back, but again there’s nothing to be worried about this.
Conclusion
So, mama, although certain things can take you by surprise like being disgusted by your once-upon-a-favorite food to not being to hold your pee in, stop worrying about things. I know this is easier said than done because even I was once in the same shoes as yours.
But, if you still think something’s wrong, there’s never harm in consulting your doctor and get your worries sorted. Meanwhile, mama, enjoy your pregnancy and a piece of advice? Sleep as much as you can because once that little one pops out, you’ll crave some beauty sleep.
